All About Room Darkening Curtains

Room Darkening Curtains
Are you one of those people who need complete darkness in order to get a restful sleep? Or do you work the graveyard shift and sleep during the day instead of at night? Or is your baby up as soon as the sun rises and you find it hard to put him down for his afternoon nap? Then you may be in need of room darkening curtains. Also known as blackout drapes, these curtains significantly cut the entry of light to your room giving you a more peaceful and relaxing sleep, hence even if you were up all night, you can still go to bed during the daytime and sleep as though it was still night time. These curtains are not only limited to the bedroom, but can also be used for your home theater to give you that movie house feel while watching your favorite flicks.

Aside from limiting the access of light, room darkening curtains also keep out noise. This is especially useful if you live next to a busy street or if your next door neighbor has some construction going on. They also act as insulation. During summer time they help keep your room cool and during the winter months help keep your room warm.  Isn’t it amazing? Because they are able to conserve energy, they also can help you save on some of your utility bills!

But before you go out and buy your set of room darkening curtains, there are some things that you first need to know. First decide how much light you want to block out and how dark you want your room to be.  Do you want a darkened room with a slight stream of light passing through or do you want total darkness? For total blackout, you will have to choose curtains that block out 99% of light as written on the package. Anything lower will only give you a darkened room with some light able to pass through.

You should also measure your windows before purchasing your curtains. Make sure the curtains you buy are wider and longer than your window measurement to ensure that they block out as much light as possible.

Choose a style and fabric that goes well with your room décor. There are many design options available with a variety of colors to choose from. A heavier fabric such as velvet will be more effective in blocking light out. Dark colors also help darken the room. Light colored fabrics, while pretty, may allow some light to sneak in. If however, you already have curtains in place and just want to darken your room, then you can use blackout curtain liners instead. You just attach these at the back of your curtains and they will work effectively to keep light out.

Once you have purchased your blackout curtains you must know how to install them properly. It is best if your curtain rods are almost at the level of your ceiling and your drapes hang almost to the floor. This will make certain that any light that may pass through any gaps at the top or sides of the curtain will not pierce through. A curtain hung this way may also give the illusion of a bigger room and window.

Room darkening curtains do not just serve to block out light to give us a restful sleep no matter what time of day. They are also energy saving home accessories that allow us to spend less on utilities. Aside from all these benefits, they can enhance our rooms with all the stylish designs available. So invest in one now. Not only are they useful but they give us that warm, cozy feeling as well.
